Were your ancestors engineers?  Have you searched  Grace’s Guide to British Industrial History?     www.gracesguide.co.uk.

Freely available it is an excellent online source of historical information on industry and manufacturing in the UK and features biographies, extracts from engineering magazines and company information. Put your ancestor’s name into the easy to use and effective search engine and it will list publications containing their name, with the page number.  Download the accompanying pdf file and find the page. There may be letters, illustrations, obituaries or articles relating to them.

This month’s blog on Grace’s Guide is ‘Women in Engineering’ covering the period of the First World War when hundreds of companies took on women to relieve manufacturing and production demands.

The site is run by volunteers and is being updated all the time.
